Government Eyes Major Academy Project as AFCON 2027 Work Accelerates

The National Council of Sports has begun the process of acquiring 100 acres in Hoima for a new training facility that will support the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

A delegation led by NCS Chairman Ambrose Tashobya inspected the land at Sir Tito Winy College on Friday as part of the wider push to upgrade national sports infrastructure.

The government is negotiating with the Bunyoro Kitara Diocese to purchase the land, which will host a football training field required by CAF as part of the cluster attached to the Hoima City Stadium. Uganda will co host AFCON 2027 with Kenya and Tanzania.

NCS intends to turn the 100 acre site into a full National Sports Academy after the tournament.

The plan includes six additional training pitches, outdoor courts for basketball and volleyball, a hostel, gym, student dormitories, classrooms, an administration block, and a future swimming pool.

Board members Moses Anyii Omara, Cecilia Anyakoit, Piloya Evelyn Gloria and Stephen Kiprotich joined the inspection, along with staff from the NCS Secretariat.

After touring the proposed academy site, the delegation visited the Hoima City Stadium where contractor SUMMA showcased the nearly complete facility.

The team walked through the VIP and VVIP sections, the venue operations centre, the media areas, the mixed zone, the indoor arena and the gym. They were also shown the pitch, which has been rated at five star level.

Government expects to officially receive the stadium within the next few weeks as AFCON preparations enter the final stages.
