Former Kampala Central District Football Association Chairman Yusuf Chuni Kyeyune has urged young footballers to embrace the game with passion and commitment rather than chasing financial gain.
Speaking at the launch of the third edition of the Hamz Cup 2026 at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, Kyeyune expressed concern over the changing mindset of modern players, noting that many now view football primarily as a source of income.
“Back then, players had genuine love and passion for the game, but today many are more concerned about the money they can earn from football,” he said.
Kyeyune also appealed to government to reduce taxes on sports equipment and related businesses, arguing that lower costs would boost fan participation, support local clubs, and ease talent development.
The Hamz Cup, sponsored by businessman Dr. Hamis Kigundu, officially kicked off on June 6 with two opening matches. Muteesa Kafeero FC impressed with a 3-0 win over Sanyu D Bags FC, while Life Team FC edged Bakuli FC 1-0 in a tight contest.
This year’s edition has drawn 32 teams from Kampala and beyond, with fixtures continuing next weekend at Hamz Stadium. The top performers will advance to the knockout rounds as the competition cements its place among Kampala’s fastest-growing football tournaments.
