Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC have continued their preparations for the new season by securing the signature of defender Nicholas Mwere from BUL FC, pending official announcement.
Per Swift Sports Uganda, the 24-year-old has agreed a three-year deal with the Venoms after leaving BUL at the end of his contract, making the switch to St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende as a free agent.
Mwere arrives with a growing reputation as one of the most reliable defenders in the domestic league. His ability to excel both at full-back and in central defence provides Vipers with added depth and versatility as they gear up for another busy campaign.
Having joined BUL in 2023, the defender quickly established himself as a vital member of the Jinja-based side. Prior to that, he featured for Busoga United, where he began attracting attention with a series of assured performances that paved the way for his rise in Ugandan football.
His impressive displays have also earned him opportunities on the international stage. Mwere represented the Uganda Cranes at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and has previously featured for Uganda’s national beach soccer team, the Sand Cranes.
The defender’s outstanding 2023/24 season was further recognized when he was named in the Uganda Premier League Team of the Season, underlining his status among the country’s top-performing defenders.
At Kitende, Mwere will join an already competitive defensive unit. He is expected to challenge for a starting place alongside experienced campaigners such as Enock Luyima and Derrick Ndahiro, who is widely expected to remain at the club.
His arrival comes during a period of change for Vipers, who are currently in the market for a new head coach following the departure of Belgian tactician Ivan Jacky Minnaert.
With ambitions of retaining their league crown and making an impact in the CAF Champions League, Vipers are actively strengthening their squad, and the acquisition of Mwere represents another significant addition to their plans for the upcoming season.
