Edin Dzeko, Bosnia’s record scorer with 73 goals in 148 games, is set for his final World Cup at 40. His late strikes against Wales and Italy carried Bosnia through the play-offs, sealing only their second appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Raised amid Sarajevo’s war, Dzeko became a symbol of resilience, winning titles in England, Germany, and Italy while never losing touch with his roots. “For younger players he became a constant,” journalist Sasa Ibrulj said.
Bosnia open their campaign tonight against co-hosts Canada in Toronto, with a squad blending homegrown talent and diaspora stars.
For Dzeko, this tournament is about more than legacy: “It is so amazing for the young players. They don’t know it yet, but it will change their lives for sure.”
