Former Uganda Cranes midfielder Michael Azira has reached another milestone in his coaching career after being named head coach of the women’s soccer team at Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
The American institution confirmed the appointment through its official social media platforms, expressing confidence in Azira’s ability to lead its women’s soccer program.
Azira joins Copiah-Lincoln from the University of Mobile, where he served as assistant coach and gained valuable collegiate experience. His new role reflects the steady progress he has made since transitioning from a successful playing career into coaching.
The former midfielder enjoyed an extensive professional career in the United States, representing nine clubs and winning the USL Pro Championship with Charleston Battery in 2012. In October 2021, he became a naturalized U.S. citizen in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Internationally, Azira represented Uganda at the 2017 and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, earning 10 caps for the Cranes. He retired from international football in April 2021 to focus fully on coaching.
Even before hanging up his boots, Azira invested in youth development. In 2011, while still an active player, he guided UMS-Wright to a state title and has since continued working with youth programs across the United States.
Beyond the touchline, Azira remains committed to nurturing talent through the Michael Azira Foundation in Kiboga District, which supports young Ugandans in football and education.
His latest appointment marks another significant achievement for Ugandan football, underscoring the growing influence of former Cranes players in coaching and player development abroad.
