World Athletics has launched the Cares project to improve support for female athletes during pregnancy and their return to competition.
The study will gather input from current and former athletes to shape policies on rankings, contracts, and financial protections. President Lord Coe said the move aims to ensure women “do not face barriers” when resuming elite sport.
US sprint legend Allyson Felix previously fought Nike over maternity pay, prompting new guarantees for athletes. More recently, British runner Calli Hauger-Thackery ran the Boston Marathon while 22 weeks pregnant, insisting motherhood strengthens her drive.
The findings are expected to influence rules ahead of the 2027 World Championships in Beijing.
