East Africa T20 Tri-Nation: Ronald Lutaya shines as Cricket Cranes humble hosts

Teenager Ronald Lutaya relished a memorable debut following his impressive display in Uganda’s 85 run victory over hosts Rwanda at the East Africa T20 Tri-Nation Cup at the Gahanga International Stadium.

Lutaya who announced his name on international stage early this year at the ICC U-19 World Cup held in West Indies joined the action at number 3 following the dismissal of Roger Mukasa.

The 19-year old hit a half century of 70 off 36 as he inspired the Cricket Cranes to an opening victory.

Uganda were impressive with bat! Opener Simon Ssesazi had 34 runs to his name, while team captain Brian Masaba and veteran Frank Nsubuga scored 18 and 31 respectively.

Laurance Mahatlane’s boys were equally impressive with the ball. Another youngster in 19-year-old Joseph Baguma led the showing here, dismissing four wickets.

Mahatlane was elated by the youngsters’ performance.

“The youngsters for me are so fearless. They are an exciting group of players. Not only were they at the world cup, but the fact that we’ve also left out two all-rounders and a batsman, just shows you we have depth in our batting and what we can do as a group.”

Henry Ssenyondo had three wickets to his name while Juma Miyaji, Bilal Hassan and Nsubuga each picked up one.

In Nairobi, the Victoria Pearls continued with their perfect start at the Kenya Women’s T20 International Quadrangular tournament with a 7 wicket win over Qatar.

The Asians were a no match for Lawrence Ssematimba’s charges as they were bowled out inside the 19th Over.

Irene Alumo with 3 wickets and Sarah Akiteng with 2 were the team’s top performers with the ball while wicket keeper Kevin Awino with 21 and assist captain Janet Mbabazi delivered the goods with the bat.

The girls return to action tomorrow against Tanzania.
