Jasmine Paolini thrilled the home crowd, including the Italian President, by defeating Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-2 to win the Italian Open.
This victory marks the first time an Italian woman has claimed the singles title in 40 years, since 1985.
An emotional Paolini, a surprise finalist at the French Open and Wimbledon last year, said holding the trophy was “beyond what I ever dreamed of.”
The 29-year-old dominated the match, recovering from an early exchange of breaks to control both sets.
The win propels Paolini to world number four, securing a top seeding for the French Open.
She also competes in tomorrow’s doubles final. Compatriot Jannik Sinner will play in the men’s singles final.
