Thunderbirds Are 2025 Women’s Series Champions-Elect After Kabale 7s Triumph

Thunderbirds Rugby Club continued their unstoppable match toward the 2025 Nile Special Uganda Rugby 7s Series women’s title with victory in the sixth stop in Kabale.

The Kyadondo outfit beat Nile Rapids by 15-10 points in the final at the Kabale Main Stadium on Sunday evening.

They had led first through Agnes Nakuya but Shaine Babirye and Unity Namulala put Nile Rapids up by 10-05 at halftime. Then Nakuya levelled matters before Janat Nandudu scored the match-winning try in the last play.

Victory in the maiden women’s competition in the Kabale 7s was Thunderbirds’ second cup this series, after Kabaka Coronation 7s.

Final Standings at Kabale 7s:

1. Thunderbirds
2. Nile Rapids
3. Walukuba Titans
4. Black Pearls
5. She Wolves
6. Avengers
7. Buddu Cuppaz
8. Kigezi Queens

This brings their tally on top of the overall series standings table to 118 points.

Coupled with Avengers’ collapse, Thunderbirds now have a comfortable sixteen-points advantage over their closest challengers with one stop left to play.

Overall Series Rankings after Stop Six:

1 Thunderbirds 118
2 Avengers 102
3 Walukuba Titans 94
4 Black Pearls 86
5 Nile Rapids 86
6 She Wolves 85

This means that, mathematically and as long as they participate in the Buffaloes 7s this coming weekend, Thunderbirds cannot be dislodged from the top of the table. Even finishing last (eighth) is enough for them to be champions this year.

Past Winners of Women’s 7s Series:

• 2021: Black Pearls
• 2022: Black Pearls
• 2023: Black Pearls
• 2024: Avengers
• 2025-to-be: Thunderbirds*
